Reducing generation gap between teenagers and parents
By : Phoebe Shaliny
It has come to my attention that the generation gap between teenagers and their parents is widening. This has been an annoying issue as teenagers never disobeyed their parents in the old days. Yes, the old days which I'm referring to how the technology has not yet evolved and the children spent most of their time with their parents. However the old days are over and teenagers in the 21st century seem to be rude, rebellious and mostly disrespectful. A number of parents struggle with raising their child in the way they want, but is the way they want to raise their child correct? In the eyes of the child, it may seem like his or her parents are trying to ruin his or life. How many times have you heard the "You're ruining my life," statement? The bottom line is, all parents want the same thing. To raise a child in the right way. Here are some suggestions on how this problem can be reduced.
Firstly, it is vital that parents should set apart some time to talk to their kids. Seeing how concerned parents are may change that particular teen's idea of his or her parents. Parents need to advice their children in every aspect of life so the child will be aware of all the dangerous harms that could happen. Next, the parents also have to listen. Listen to what their children have to say. If it is not applied, then the child may feel like they have no freedom to explain themselves. So, let them talk. It is a good way to assure the teenager has every right a person should have.
On the same account, one of the biggest things parents should do is to monitor their child's activities. These days, teenagers seem to be capable of doing anything. Smoking, vandalism, drugs, you name it. So a parent should always make sure their child is on the right track. Let's just say this particular teen gets off the radar of his or her parents for one day and comes back home late at night, then what will happen? This is where the ground rules come in. Rules like being home before 8 p.m., no hanging out with friends on school nights and no driving without permission should be told beforehand. This way, the teen will know what not to do.
Now, parents should be flexible. They do not have to appear as monsters to their children. It is okay for parents to let some things slip. Sometimes, it may not even be the child's fault. So, parents who are overbearing and overprotective are a no go here. Parents need to learn to accept. What's done cannot be undone. As they say, we learn from our mistakes so parents should allow their child to make mistakes as nobody is perfect. Anyway, another way for parents to make sure their child is in check is to get to know their friend's parents. So when they go out, parents can make sure their children’s whereabouts.
One way to strengthen the parent-child relationship is to go for family outings. For example, going out for a nice dinner. Over the dinner table is where families usually bond and it's such a beautiful thing to see. On the other hand, as how mutual bond is important, mutual respect is also needed in a family. No matter how reckless and rebellious their child may be, they still have their saying in most matters. This is where the parents have to respect their child in terms of making decisions and so on. Even though they are just teenagers, along the childish acts, maturity will eventually hit them. So, now we have come to how parents react to their child's achievements. Parents have to be more supportive of their children's accomplishments and tell them "We love you," every now and then. This is an assurance to the child that their parents will always have their backs.
Upon saying all that, for the parents, raising a child seem like the most difficult thing to do and some parents even give up on their children. What I want to say is no matter how hard it may seem, going through all these struggles is worth it. It is worth it to see them grow up into a good perso
